Iranian Gunboats Fire on Tanker as Tensions Escalate in Strait of Hormuz
Iranian gunboats opened fire on a tanker attempting to transit the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday, while a second vessel reported being struck by a projectile, according to CNN, citing maritime authorities.
The incidents come after Iran’s military announced it was reimposing restrictions on the vital shipping route, blaming what it described as “repeated breaches of trust” by the United States.
CNN reports that the renewed restrictions have already disrupted maritime traffic, with tracking data showing several tankers reversing course or remaining stationary near the strait, a critical corridor for global oil shipments.
Diplomatic tensions remain high. Iranian officials say Tehran is reviewing new proposals from the United States following talks facilitated by Pakistan. Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump said negotiations are moving forward but signaled frustration, warning that Washington would not tolerate “blackmail” over control of the strait.
Iranian sources indicate a second round of talks could take place as early as Monday, though U.S. officials have not confirmed those plans. Key issues remain unresolved between the two sides.
In a further development, a senior Iranian official told CNN that vessels may be required to pay fees for priority passage through the strait, with those failing to comply facing delays.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints, and any disruption to shipping through the area has significant implications for global energy markets.
