Indian Creek Unrest Rekindles Deep‑Seated Toledo Land Tensions

In the wake of unrest in Indian Creek Village that thrust long standing land disputes in southern Belize into the national spotlight, Toledo Private and Lease Landowners Ltd. is now calling for restraint, accountability, and clarity as investigations continue. The group says the recent tensions underscore years of unresolved issues on the ground, fueled by competing authorities and a lack of law and order, even as leaders insist the situation in the village has since calmed and must not be allowed to spiral into further conflict or misinformation.

“Toledo Private Lease & Landowners, we came together because we need to protect ourselves and our constitutional right to own what we already own as private and lease landowners. So, Indian Creek, this recent example, is just one example of a lot of what’s been happening on the ground for years. And so, the investigation into that is ongoing, it certainly brought a lot of necessary attention. We don’t want any violence, but when there is a lack of law and order and clarity, this is what happens.”

“The matter, as far as I am aware, things have quieted down in Indian Creek and a lot of what is happening in Indian Creek is really amongst the villagers themselves, between the views that the chairman holds and the Second Alcalde with the village council members, and the actions taken by the alcalde. So that gets muddled up, but it’s really just disharmony between them that has brought a lot of conflict in the village. But things have quieted down. I guess people are waiting for the investigation to be completed and then, hopefully, that there’s going to be a press conference to share what the findings are, because it’s really, really important that we keep law and order, that no one is injured and that you don’t, as a result of your views, start defaming organizations or individuals, simply to promote your agenda. I think it’s really irresponsible.”
