Gunman Storms White House Correspondent’s Dinner, Trump Evacuated
A gunman opened fire Saturday night at a hotel in Washington, D.C., where the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner was being held, forcing U.S. President Donald Trump and other officials to be rushed out.
Officials said the suspect forced his way through a Secret Service checkpoint in the hotel lobby carrying a shotgun, a handgun, and several knives. Officers confronted him, and during the struggle, he was tackled and arrested.
Police Chief Jeffery Carroll said officers exchanged gunfire with the man, but he was not hit. “They tackled him to the ground and handcuffed him,” Carroll said.
One Secret Service agent was injured and taken to hospital.
Trump addressed the incident later on Truth Social, praising law enforcement for acting “quickly and bravely” and initially encouraging the event to continue. He later posted again saying law enforcement had asked him and others to leave the premises. The event, he said, would be rescheduled within 30 days.
