Fire Destroys About 13 Structures in San Pedro Columbia

A fast-moving fire has destroyed approximately 13 structures in the village of San Pedro Columbia, leaving several families affected and prompting calls for urgent assistance.

Chairman Abner Cal told News 5 that the blaze spread rapidly due to strong winds and the presence of thatched buildings in the area.

“The fire is being contained with the help of villagers,” Cal said, noting that residents quickly mobilised to prevent further damage.

According to Cal, the fire stretched across roughly a quarter-mile, impacting multiple structures along its path.

Preliminary information indicates the fire may have started in a kitchen belonging to one of the local churches before spreading quickly through nearby structures.

At least ten families have been affected by the blaze.

Community leaders are now appealing for support, as affected residents begin the process of rebuilding. The full extent of the damage remains under assessment.

Ya’axché Conservation Trust deployed rangers to assist.
