Feeling the pinch? Belizeans are Running Out of Optimism

Buying a car, fixing the house, or simply making ends meet? Fewer Belizeans feel good about any of it right now.

The latest national Consumer Confidence Index (CCI) fell 4.5% in March 2026. It dropped from 47.8 to 45.7, according to the Statistical Institute of Belize. It was the steepest month-on-month decline since June last year.

Every component of the index worsened. Expectations about the future fell 4.9%, confidence in present conditions dropped 4.2%, and willingness to make major purchases like homes, cars, and furniture slipped 4.3%.

Urban residents felt the squeeze hardest. City-based confidence collapsed 9.2%, compared to just 0.7% among rural consumers.

The Belize District recorded the sharpest district-level fall. Young Belizeans aged 18 to 24 saw the biggest confidence drop of any age group, falling 13.9% in a single month.

Stann Creek was the only district to buck the trend, jumping 12.6% into optimistic territory.
