Belize Just Lost its Most Affordable Flight to the US
The most affordable air link between Belize and the United States is gone.
Spirit Airlines ceased all global operations on Saturday, 2nd May 2026, cancelling every flight with immediate effect and shutting down customer service entirely. The Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport issued a public notice confirming all Spirit flights have been cancelled and customer service is no longer available.
“All Spirit flights have been cancelled, and customer service is no longer available,” the official notice read.
Spirit had been struggling financially for months. It filed for bankruptcy in August 2025 after a failed merger attempt and rising fuel costs.
The shutdown ends a service that only launched in November 2025, when Spirit began three weekly nonstop flights between Fort Lauderdale and Belize City at an introductory fare of US$85 one-way.
At the time, Minister of Tourism Anthony Mahler called it a significant development. “This will keep them a bit honest and give travellers an option at least,” he said.
That option no longer exists. Talks of a US$500 million government bailout collapsed on Saturday. US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed the Trump administration had tried.
“I guess we’re looking at it. If we could do it, we do it, but only if it’s a good deal,” US president Donald Trump had said on Friday.
Travellers with Spirit bookings are advised not to go to the airport and to rebook immediately on another carrier.
