What Is Hantavirus? Rare but Dangerous Disease Explained

A rare but potentially deadly illness known as Hantavirus is back in the spotlight following a recent outbreak aboard a cruise ship that left three people dead and several others ill.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), at least two cases have been confirmed, with additional suspected infections under investigation. The outbreak occurred on a vessel traveling from Argentina to Cape Verde, with health officials stressing that the overall risk to the public remains low.

Hantavirus is a group of viruses mainly spread by rodents. Humans typically become infected through contact with rodent urine, droppings, or saliva most commonly by inhaling contaminated particles that become airborne when disturbed.

While human-to-human transmission is extremely rare, certain strains, such as the Andes variant found in South America, have shown limited spread between close contacts, something experts are now examining in the cruise ship outbreak.

Early symptoms often resemble the flu, including fever, fatigue, chills, and muscle aches. However, the disease can rapidly worsen. In severe cases, hantavirus can affect the lungs or kidneys, leading to breathing difficulties, organ failure, and death.

There is no specific cure or antiviral treatment for hantavirus. Medical care focuses on managing symptoms, making early detection and prevention essential.
