Overcharged on the Bus? Report It, Says Transport Minister
Bus fares went up on Monday, and some operators are being accused by commuters for charging more than they should be.
The government approved a $3 per gallon diesel subsidy this week, backed by $1.5 million in public funds over three months. It is set to roll out on Monday and meant to help bus operators manage rising costs. Fares increased by between fifty cents and one dollar depending on the route.
But complaints have been consistently coming in, and Transport Minister Dr Louis Zabaneh addressed those concerns, saying that the government is watching.
“That is why we posted it on our social media page, and there is a phone number that commuters can use to call in and report those instances, and immediately our people will investigate,” he said.
The minister was equally clear about the consequences for operators who push their luck.
Dr Zabaneth said confirmed cases of overcharging could result in operators losing their licence to operate.
