Gunfire Report Leads Police to Two Pistols and Three Officers Detained

A report of gunfire on Raccoon Street Extension has taken a troubling turn, after police detained five people, including three of their own. Officers responded to the area on Sunday night, intercepted a vehicle of interest, and found two nine-millimeter pistols during a search. So far, no one has reported being shot or injured, but investigators are treating the matter as discharging a firearm in public while they wait for forensic tests to determine whether those weapons were fired. Assistant Superintendent Stacy Smith says the investigation remains active.

ASP Stacy Smith, Staff Officer

“On fifth July at around nine-ten p.m., police officers responded to shots being fired in the vicinity of Raccoon Street Extension. And as a consequence of directives or information from the Crime Fusion Center, a vehicle was apprehended – a vehicle of interest was apprehended and on board that vehicle were five persons, three of whom are police officers. And a search of that vehicle led to the discovery of two nine-millimeter pistols for which two persons who were on board are the holder of firearm licenses. A scene was established and I think four or so expended shells were recovered. We spoke to those persons; however, they have not been forthcoming with information. However, the process is that the expended shells will be submitted for comparative analysis with the firearm as a part of the ongoing investigation. Those persons are still in custody at the moment.”

“Can you say if any statement has been gathered about the nature of the shooting? Was it at a carnival practice?”

ASP Stacy Smith

“I have not been able to confirm the nature of it. I don’t think any of them have given any statement. As of now, it is being treated as a discharging of firearm because no person has come forward indicating that they were fired upon. So that is the status of the investigation at this moment.”
