A Ban on “Red Top” Coming Soon?

The Ministry of Health and Wellness is considering a possible ban on “Red Top,” the popular overproof rum, as part of efforts to tackle alcohol abuse and related health problems in Belize.

Health Minister Kevin Bernard told PLus News that the ministry is also looking at other health risks beyond sugary drinks.

“In addition to sugary drinks in schools, we are looking at other things that cause some of these illnesses, the tobacco control bill for example,” Bernard told Plus News.

He said strong alcoholic drinks sold in small, cheap containers are a growing concern.

“We are looking at the possible ban of Red Top, those strong rum in those small containers that are killing our young people,” he said. “We have to look at possible leverage, some sin tax as well in terms of addressing the issues of alcohol abuse that is plaguing our country especially in our young population.”

“Red Top,” also known as Old Master Over Proof Rum, is a strong local spirit produced by L&R Liquors. It is widely known for its high alcohol content and low cost.

The ministry says alcohol abuse, especially among young people, is becoming a serious public health issue.
