A New Memoir Aims to Help Bermudian Landing Community
Michael Herrera Senior is putting the stories and lessons of Bermudan Landing on paper, not only to preserve the past, but also to help shape the community’s future. His first book, Memoirs of Michael: Bermudan Landing Part One, reflects on the values and discipline of earlier generations and how attitudes have changed among young people. It is the first in a planned four-part series, and Herrera hopes the proceeds will help him establish a foundation for elderly residents, struggling families and schoolchildren.

“Tie in with this book, there’s a foundation that’s going to come with this. And the foundation is to provide Ensure and pampers for the elderly and the sick, and then grocery for the non-believers that are struggling and the believers that are struggling. Grocery, clothing, footwear, and stuff for school. So because it is God, divine providence, God is bringing about his divine providence in my life. There was a series of prophecies that came with this book with the foundation. So I just wanted to put this out there because from the siscxteenth of June, I officially became a Belizean author. But I kept it on a rack. I’m not a proud person. But this book is talking about a value system that once exists is long gone, because back in my grandparent’s days, they were strict, they were disciplined, respectful, and mannerly. We couldn’t pass our adults without saying good morning in the village, or else they could have disciplined us. And if we tell, then we can get flagged again. And then we were not allowed to, like say, when adults is in a conversation, we were not allowed to intervene, because just the eyes weh Granny and Grandpa give you. You sone know what that means. So they were just stricter. And this book is compared that time of generation to this generation.”
Herrera also plans to seek support from the Ministry of Education and conduct a school tour throughout the Belize River Valley to promote the book.
