Action Icon Chuck Norris Dies at 86
In a statement posted to social media Friday, the Norris family confirmed his passing. “It is with heavy hearts that our family shares the sudden passing of our beloved Chuck Norris yesterday morning,” the message read. “While we would like to keep the circumstances private, please know that he was surrounded by his family and was at peace.”
News reports indicate Norris suffered a medical emergency in Hawaii on Thursday. The family thanked supporters for their prayers and described him as a man who lived “with faith, purpose, and an unwavering commitment to the people he loved.”
Born Carlos Ray Norris in Oklahoma, he first gained international attention in 1972 starring opposite Bruce Lee in the martial arts classic The Way of the Dragon. By the late 1970s and 1980s, Norris had cemented his status as a box-office action star in films such as Missing in Action and The Delta Force.
He later found renewed fame on television as Cordell Walker in the hit CBS series Walker, Texas Ranger, which ran from 1993 to 2001 and earned him a new generation of fans.
Before Hollywood, Norris built his reputation as a world karate champion after serving in the U.S. Air Force in Korea, where he began studying martial arts. He later founded his own system and taught celebrity students, including Steve McQueen.
In the 2000s, Norris experienced an unexpected pop culture resurgence through the viral “Chuck Norris Facts” meme phenomenon, which humorously exaggerated his tough-guy image.
Beyond entertainment, Norris was also a philanthropist. In 1990, with support from then-President George H. W. Bush, he founded Kickstart Kids, a character-building program that uses martial arts to mentor young people.
From martial arts champion to film star, television icon, and internet legend, Chuck Norris leaves behind a legacy that blended discipline, faith, and an enduring larger-than-life presence.
