Ambergris Caye Gears Up for a Safe Easter Weekend

Two weeks after a violent triple murder in San Pedro, residents of Ambergris Caye are still reeling. Karim Espat, Oscar Mas, and Yerlin Alvarez were killed in what authorities describe as a targeted gang attack. The brazen crime has raised concerns just as the island prepares for the busy Easter season.

Belize Rural South Area Representative André Perez is calling for calm. He insists early evidence points to isolated gang violence and not a threat to the island’s tourism hubs.

“It’s always a concern when we have these types of crimes… The investigation is showing that this is something that is really gang warfare and certainly is not permeating into where the central area where the tourism is,” said André Perez, Area Representative of Belize Rural South.

Additional police patrols have been deployed across San Pedro and Caye Caulker ahead of the holiday weekend to reassure residents and visitors alike.
