Answering a Call to Serve: The Essential Role of Social Workers in Belize

Raising Awareness About Social Work

Today’s episode of Open Your Eyes highlighted the essential role of social workers in supporting individuals, families, and communities across Belize. Joining the conversation was Dr. Angela Flowers, Chair of the Social Work Department at the University of Belize (UB), alongside Tahra Fairweather, a medical social worker at the Southside Clinic, and Kalcey Tucker, a school counselor at Sadie Vernon High School.

The discussion focused on the many responsibilities of social workers, the challenges they help people navigate, and the need for greater recognition of a profession that plays a vital role in community well-being.

Dr. Flowers explained that social work extends far beyond what many people traditionally associate with the profession. Social workers can be found in healthcare, schools, courts, police departments, human resources, and other settings where people need support. Their work involves understanding individuals within the broader context of their lives, including their family backgrounds, living conditions, beliefs, and personal circumstances.

A Profession That Goes Beyond Expectations

Fairweather shared that her interest in human behavior led her to pursue social work at the University of Belize. She emphasized that the profession involves looking at the whole person rather than focusing only on a particular behavior or problem.

Tucker described how her desire to help others began during childhood. Her experiences inspired her to pursue a degree in social work, which helped her understand the profession’s broad scope and the many ways social workers can make a difference.

Both professionals highlighted that social work is not limited to removing children from their homes or responding to crises. Instead, it involves helping people address challenges, connecting them with resources, and improving their overall well-being.

Addressing the Need for Greater Awareness

Dr. Flowers noted that attracting more people to the profession remains a challenge. She explained that many students are more familiar with career paths such as business, tourism, medicine, and nursing, while social work receives less visibility within the education system.

She also pointed to the need for social workers to receive greater respect and recognition for their contributions, particularly because the work often extends beyond regular working hours and can involve difficult situations.

Reflecting on the department’s efforts to promote the profession, Dr. Flowers shared that a previous social work conference attracted more than 100 participants, including international representatives. The conference helped demonstrate that social work is a global profession and encouraged greater understanding among community members, businesses, policymakers, and other stakeholders. Another conference is planned for 2027, with organizers hoping to increase participation.

Expanding Opportunities for Social Workers

The conversation also highlighted efforts to strengthen social work education and professional support in Belize. Dr. Flowers shared that the University of Belize is considering re-establishing its evening programme to accommodate working professionals who want to pursue a degree but may not be able to attend classes during the day.

The department continues to participate in community initiatives addressing issues such as domestic violence and mental health, while working with organizations and institutions that support vulnerable individuals and families.

Dr. Flowers also discussed ongoing efforts to establish a National Social Work Association in Belize. The proposed organization would help provide professional oversight, protect social workers, and safeguard the interests of the clients and patients they serve. The department is also in discussions with the National Association of Social Workers in the United States about potential support for local initiatives.

Encouraging the Next Generation to Serve

The discussion served as a reminder that social work offers a range of career opportunities for people who want to make a difference in their communities. By increasing awareness, expanding educational access, and strengthening professional support, social work advocates hope to encourage more Belizeans to consider the field.

As the conversation concluded, the guests encouraged viewers to recognize the value of social workers and the important role they play in helping individuals and communities navigate life’s challenges.

The message was clear: social work is a broad profession built around understanding people, responding to their needs, and helping create stronger communities.
