Authorities Investigate Maya Mound Destruction in Boston

What started as a tip from a village chairman has now triggered a full-blown investigation into illegal logging in Boston Village. Last Friday, News Five began tracking the story after concerns were raised about unauthorized logging activity. The Forest Department has already confirmed that the loggers broke the terms of their license. But now, there’s a deeper concern, damage to ancient Maya mounds in the area that may have been bulldozed. The Institute of Archaeology is stepping in to assess the impact, and Minister of Culture Francis Fonseca is weighing in as the investigation unfolds.

“I have not received a report but I did receive information from the director of the institute of archeology to say that they have received a request for them for archaeology to go into the area, do an inspection for them to prepare a report. I think that was done two days ago, but they have not completed that report. I believe one archeologist went out there yesterday and they will prepare a report. We have a zero-tolerance policy at NICH at the institute of archeology. But I don’t want to get ahead of it because I don’t know what was destroyed, if anything. We don’t know at this point, but we have to wait for the  institute to report on the matter and if they determine that there was damage done to anything then the appropriate action will be taken.”
