Authorities Monitor Threat from 20 Escaped Guatemalan Gang Members
The Belize Police Department is monitoring the potential threat posed by 20 high-profile gang members who escaped from Guatemala’s Fraijanes II maximum-security prison on October 11, 2025.
The escapees are known members of the 18th Street Gang.
According to Assistant Superintendent of Police Stacy Smith, Belize’s proximity to Guatemala raises concerns that the fugitives may attempt to enter the country.
Smith said that “police officers and the police department have put into place strategic operational efforts to thwart such eventuality… These persons are dangerous and are to be considered as such.”
Guatemalan authorities have shared photos and information on the fugitives, who are linked to murder, extortion, and drug trafficking. Special units, alongside Interpol and the FBI, have been deployed nationwide in Guatemala to prevent further escapes or cross-border movement.
Smith stressed the importance of public assistance. “We rely on the members of the general public to assist us with information if ever they may come across these individuals,” she added.
