B.D.F. Rings in Holiday Cheer with Annual Christmas Luncheon

It was all smiles and holiday cheer today at the B.D.F. Airwing in Ladyville, where the Belize Defense Force held its annual Christmas luncheon. Prime Minister John Briceño and Defense Minister Florencio Marin Jr. rolled up their sleeves and joined in serving meals to the men and women who protect our borders every day. This festive tradition isn’t limited to good food; it’s also about showing appreciation to those who put their lives on the line for Belize’s sovereignty. News Five’s Britney Gordon was there and brings us the story.

It’s Christmas time in Belize, and for the men and women of the Belize Defense Force, that means a special holiday lunch and ceremony, a chance to celebrate and honor their hard work protecting our borders every single day. It’s a tradition, one that soldiers and the country’s leaders look forward to every year. Here, soldiers can sit and enjoy a hearty meal served to them by Minister of Defense, Florencio Marin Jr. and Prime Minister John Briceño.

“It’s a great military tradition, particularly great pride to participate in because throughout this here, the soldiers are working on our direction. But this year we take the time out to serve them their food and give them plants for their whole year of service.”

The soldiers also received cash prizes and gifts as they were recognized for various achievements. PM Briceno says that it’s important to acknowledge the accomplishments of Belize’s often unsung heroes.

“To me,  I find it that it least that I can do to go to so some form of, of appreciation for what they do for us out here. Many of our BDF members are on heroes. They do a lot of things out there for us to jungle protecting us, and they never recognize for that work. So I think this Lisa can do something to be here. Break bread just before. And in many instances I serve food along with the other officer.”

Meanwhile, Florencio Marin Junior explains the importance of keeping these traditions alive as Belize Defense Force Soldiers offer their time, energy and safety to protect and preserve Belize.

“Us giving thanks. The military is big on giving gratitude to those who serve. Because remember, these are the ones who perhaps work the hardest. Throughout the country. What I mean by that is that when they’re on patrol, they’re out there 24/7, sometimes weeks on end. Most other work, you go there in the morning, you come home in the evening, you have a weekend, not with the military, when you are on patrol, when you are on duties, you on full time.”

As the holiday season unfolds, today’s luncheon served as a reminder of the sacrifice and dedication of Belize’s soldiers and marked a cheerful oath to 2026. Britney Gordon for News Five.
