BBA: Northern Corridor Transport Plan in the Works
The Belize Bus Association (BBA) wants government support for a planned modernisation of public transportation along the Northern Corridor, including access to fiscal concessions comparable to those granted to the National Bus Company (NBC).
The BBA said work is underway on a comprehensive plan for the corridor serving Orange Walk and Corozal districts.
The association has not yet disclosed the proposed improvements, but says the initiative is intended to enhance the daily travel experience for commuters while creating opportunities for businesses and communities in the north.
The BBA says independent Belizean bus operators have an important role to play in modernising public transportation. As the government advances its investment in the NBC, the association wants similar support for independent operators, including access to fiscal concessions and other measures to help implement its plan.
The BBA did not specify which concessions it is seeking. Such measures can include tax relief or reductions in import duties, potentially lowering the cost of purchasing buses, parts and other equipment.
The association says it will unveil the plan in the coming weeks, when it expects to provide further details on the proposed improvements and their anticipated benefits for the northern districts.
