BCWJ to Reactivate Protests Over BTL Severance

Talks between the Belize Communication Workers for Justice (BCWJ) and BTL executives have deteriorated after a shift in the company’s position on severance payments.

At Monday’s meeting at the Labour Department, executives indicated that the payments would be made without interest. That development angered former employees, who view the change as a step backwards.

Former employee Emily Turner said the workers no longer believe negotiations are being handled in good faith. She explained that the group has a firm mandate to secure 6% interest and is trying to avoid court action but feels its position is being undermined.

The workers have requested a meeting with the full board of directors. The BCWJ argue that key decision-makers need to understand the context of their demand.

Labour Senator Glenfield Dennison also attended Monday’s meeting. He said BTL’s leadership appears inflexible and unaware of the growing public relations issue. He believes the company is attempting to minimise its payout.

The workers plan to continue protesting and are preparing further action later this week to increase pressure on the chairman.
