BDF Says Troops Ready if Trouble Spills Over From Mexico

As cartel‑related violence intensifies just across the northern border, the Belize Defence Force (BDF) is reinforcing its presence in response to potential spillover threats.

The recent killing of Mexican cartel leader Nemesio “El Mencho” Cervantes, along with reports of further executions in Quintana Roo, prompted Prime Minister John Briceño to seek U.S. support in countering rising cartel activity.

BDF Commander Brigadier General Anthony Velasquez said the force is closely monitoring developments and has already increased operations in the north. “It is a bit multi‑layered, so we have intelligence‑driven operations… We have communication with our Mexican counterparts. So, anything that is happening over the border, we know instantly,” he explained.

Under ‘Operation Northern Fortress’, additional troops have been deployed, supported by new vehicles, ATVs, and a building at the Corozal Free Zone to strengthen patrols. “We have enough troops to deal with anything that pops up. And if anything big happens, we can reinforce the north with more soldiers,” he said.

While acknowledging the risk, Velasquez said that Belize remains vigilant. “The threat is real; it is real because it is happening in Mexico… That is why we have bolstered our operations, increased our intelligence in the north, and we are prepared to deal with anything that might happen,” he added.

So far, authorities report no increase in cartel activity inside Belize.
