Belize Boxing Champion To Take on Mexican Fighter
This Saturday, national boxing champion Amir Rudon will face Mexican fighter Carlos Elvira for the WBC FECARBOX Silver Super Lightweight title at Swift Hall in Belize City. Rudon hopes to make history as the first Belizean to compete for this belt.
“I am currently the national champion of Belize. Now, this puts us in a regional ranking, which will open many more doors for us, not only me but the other boxers coming behind me also,” Rudon said. “I’ve been training really really hard… I’m a hundred per cent ready.”
Three years ago, he trained under a tree with barely any equipment. Today, he runs Alpha Boxing Club, mentoring young fighters and giving them a positive path away from the streets.
“I take great pride and honour in developing the sport,” Rudon said.
The fight night will also feature amateur bouts, including Ladyville resident Akil Flowers, whose mother spoke about how boxing transformed her son. “I see where he has grown; he has become humbler… He takes it out on the bag. It is the best place to take it out,” she said, adding that the sport offers youth an alternative to gangs and violence.
Among the amateur boxers, Erin Sosa Montero is the only female competing that night and continues the legacy of her grandfather, a former boxer. She balances early morning and evening training with schoolwork. “It takes a lot out of you, physically, mentally to come in every day.…It is tiring, but it is very rewarding,” she said.
