Belize City Mechanic Jailed After Guilty Plea in Cannabis Case

Tonight, a Belize City mechanic is facing serious consequences after changing his plea in a major drug case. Forty-seven-year-old Fidel Ramirez of Lavender Street was convicted for possession of over two pounds of cannabis with intent to supply, two thousand, ninety-one grams to be exact. Ramirez, who had initially pleaded not guilty, switched his plea to guilty today in Court Three. The magistrate fined him ten thousand dollars, plus a five-dollar court fee and ordered him to pay five thousand dollars immediately. He couldn’t come up with the cash, so he’s now behind bars. Ramirez also received a suspended sentence of two years, meaning if he gets into trouble during that time, he’ll serve jail time. If he fails to pay the remaining five thousand dollars by December thirtieth, he faces two more years in prison. This conviction stems from a January drug bust where police found the cannabis in his possession. Back then, Ramirez claimed he didn’t know about the drugs, but today, the guilty plea sealed his fate.
