Belize Coast Guard Puts Boots on Caye Caulker
Security on Belize’s northern waters is getting a timely upgrade with the launch of a new Belize Coast Guard operating base on Caye Caulker.
The base places security closer to one of the country’s busiest and fastest-growing island communities. It is expected to improve response times to emergencies and increase surveillance in an area that is vulnerable to drug trafficking and other illicit activities.
“I believe the entire community will feel more relieved and have more sense of security, especially on the sea,” said Seleny Villanueva-Pott, Chairlady of the Caye Caulker Village Council.
Authorities say the presence also supports conservation and protects valuable marine resources near key developments. “Our overall national security strategy is to increase the presence of our security forces throughout the country. And the Coast Guard does have some law enforcement capabilities,” said Rear Admiral Gregory Soberanis, Commandant of the Belize Coast Guard.
He added, “Working in collaboration with the police out here, they were able to protect our maritime waters and if necessary, assist the police in their work.”
The base forms part of a wider national security push to expand coverage along Belize’s coast.
What does this mean for safety, tourism, and livelihoods on the island? Hear all about it in tonight’s News Five newscast at 6:00 o’clock.
