Belize Condemns China’s Military Pressure on Taiwan
The Government of Belize has condemned continued military intimidation by the People’s Republic of China against the Republic of China (Taiwan), warning that such actions threaten peace and stability in the region.
In a statement, Belize said the military drills undermine dialogue and increase tensions across the Taiwan Strait. Belize also reaffirmed its strong support for Taiwan, calling for the peaceful resolution of differences in accordance with international law.
China’s military on Monday launched joint live-fire drills involving air, naval, and missile forces around Taiwan, calling them a “stern warning” against separatism and foreign interference. Taiwan placed its military on high alert, accusing Beijing of being “the biggest destroyer of peace.”
Taiwanese authorities said the drills disrupted air travel, affecting more than 100,000 international passengers. The exercises followed China’s anger over a potential major U.S. arms sale to Taiwan and comments by Japan’s prime minister suggesting possible military involvement if China acts against the island.
Belize is one of a small number of countries that maintain formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan and has consistently voiced support for Taiwan on the international stage.
