Belize Establishes Office of Radiation Safety and Security
The Government of Belize has approved the creation of a new Office of Radiation Safety and Security within the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change, and Solid Waste Management.
The office will serve as the country’s regulatory authority for all activities involving ionizing radiation, ensuring compliance with international safety standards. It will also implement safeguard agreements with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to guarantee that nuclear material is used solely for peaceful purposes.
The agency will oversee import and export controls, manage radiation source inventories, and regulate the disposal of disused materials. Officials say the move reflects Belize’s growing commitment to global safety and security obligations.
