Belize Expands HIV Support for Children

Earlier this month, a major step was taken to support children living with HIV in Belize, and it’s a move that could make a real difference. The Ministry of Economic Transformation teamed up with National Health Insurance to sign a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at expanding access to life-saving care. The plan includes rolling out Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis, or PrEP, across the country, a key tool in HIV prevention. But that’s not all. Through a partnership with Hand in Hand Ministries, the initiative also ensures that HIV-positive children receive vital nutritional and vitamin support. It’s all covered by the government through the Global Fund, and it marks a shift toward a more inclusive, community-driven approach to healthcare. CEO Pol shares more on what this means for families across Belize.

Carlos Pol, Chief Executive Officer, Ministry of Economic Development

“The Ministry of Economic Transformation has been identified as a principal recipient to administer, manage the global fund. As of December first, 2025. So what we did with NHI is part of the implementation of an action plan that we have with the global fund. The fund has provided and will continue to provide financing for three years. And we have different partners and sub-recipient that will be benefiting from these funds, the Ministry of Economic Development, we are just the principal recipient and we manage the funds on behalf of the Global Fund.”
