Belize Expresses Solidarity Following Guyana Ferry Tragedy

The government of Belize has extended its condolences and support to the people of Guyana following the capsizing of a passenger ferry off the country’s northern coast, an incident that has left dozens feared dead and many others still missing.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Prime Minister John Briceño, on behalf of the Government and people of Belize, expressed solidarity with Guyana as search and rescue efforts continue.

The MV Barima, carrying 116 passengers and 17 crew members, capsized late Saturday while travelling from Georgetown to Port Kaituma. Authorities have rescued 67 people, while search teams continue efforts to locate those who remain missing.

Prime Minister Briceño said Belize is praying for the safe rescue of those still unaccounted for and offered comfort to the families anxiously awaiting news of their loved ones.

“The thoughts of the people of Belize are with the people of Guyana as they grapple with this tragedy,” the statement said.

A large-scale search and rescue operation involving the Guyana Defence Force, Coast Guard, private vessels and regional partners continues.
