Belize Falls Short Of Podium Finish in AFECAVOL Final Four

Good evening, I am Paul Lopez with this week’s installment of Sports Monday, proudly brought to you by the National Sports Council of Belize.

Belize’s National Women’s Volleyball Team participated in the AFECAVOL Final Four Championship in Managua, Nicaragua over the last several days. On Thursday last week Team Belize defeated Nicaragua in a four-set match, three to one. And then on Friday they played against Costa Rica and lost that match three sets to zero. Team Belize bounced back on Saturday with a convincing three sets to zero victory over Guatemala. On Sunday, Team Belize played a rematch against Guatemala for the bronze medal. This one went to five sets, but ultimately Guatemala overcame Belize and won the match three sets to two, leaving Team Belize to settle for fourth place. On the bright side, Fatima Ramirez was recognized for her outstanding performance. She received two individual awards, one for 2nd Best Hitter and another for Best Scorer.

Staying on the volleyball front, The Belize Volleyball Association has a new president. A couple weeks back the association met to elect new leadership. Coming out of that event, Francis Usher was elected as the new president of the Belize Volleyball Association. Usher was elected alongside eight executives. We spoke with Usher about his plans to manage and execute the tasks at hand.

“So I think as a team we will delegate responsibilities. In fact, one of the things we spoke about last night was the delegation of the various different task, so we have list of the twenty, thirty things that needs to get done. So, we divide and conquer. We prioritize and execute and that is the way we get it done. We don’t need to centralize the decision making. We know what is the desired end state and we work collectively toward it and everyone has their role to play and we are going to work to get it done. It is not a one-man show.”

Going back to Belizean athletes and their outstanding performance outside of the country, tonight we highlight Derrick “Young Phenom” Chavarria and Jaylen Briceno who finished tenth and twenty second place respectively while representing Belize at the Clasica Provincia de Chiriqui in Panama on Sunday. Briceno also finished third in among the Under-twenty-three riders. Team Belize’s contingent also featured riders such as Jyven Gonzalen, Dylan Levy, Tarique Flowers, Goran Gabouriel and Carlton Robinson.

Well folks, that is all we have for you in tonight’s coverage of Sports Monday brough to you by the National Sports Council. Catch you in the next one.
