Belize Files Evidence in Sapodilla Sovereignty Case

The fight over the Sapodilla Cayes has returned to the International Court of Justice, and Belize is putting its legal case firmly on the record. On September twenty-first, the government submitted two volumes of written observations responding directly to Guatemala’s claim over the southern island group. One volume contains Belize’s formal legal arguments, while the second includes the evidence and supporting documents behind its position. The filing moves the sovereignty dispute into another critical stage, as both countries seek to convince the court where the Sapodilla Cayes rightfully belong. At the center of the case is a long-running question: who holds sovereignty over the Sapodilla Cayes, also known as Cayes Zapotillos? The case was originally brought by Belize against Honduras, but Guatemala has since been allowed to intervene. That means all three countries now have a direct legal interest in how the court examines the competing claims surrounding the southernmost group of islands in Belize’s territory. The Government of Belize says it filed its observations within the extended deadline established by the court on April sixteenth, 2026. The submission was made under Article eighty-five, paragraph one, of the International Court of Justice’s Rules of Court.

 

Honduras also filed its written observations on Guatemala’s statement that same day, placing the responses of both principal parties before the court for consideration. Belize was represented during the filing by Mariana Verde, Chief Operations Officer in the Office of Belize’s Agent to the International Court of Justice. She was accompanied by Catherine Drummond, a member of the country’s legal team. While the government has not publicly disclosed the arguments contained in the two-volume submission, the filing represents another important procedural step in Belize’s effort to defend its claim to the Sapodilla Cayes before the world’s highest court.
