Belize is hosting a trinational workshop this week that brings together officials from Guatemala and Mexico to discuss the future of the Greater Maya Forest, one of the largest tropical forests left in Central America.

The sessions, held in Placencia from March 22 to 28, include representatives from Belize’s Forest Department, Guatemala’s CONAP, and Mexico’s CONANP. The aim is to develop a joint action plan, identify priority conservation areas, and share “best practices” for managing protected areas.

Participants will also visit Mountain Pine Ridge and the Chiquibul Forest to see firsthand the challenges facing Belize’s landscapes.

In a statement, the Forest Department said the workshop reflects the “continued commitment of the three countries to safeguard the Greater Maya Forest”.
