Belize Honours Friendship with Taiwan at National Day Event
Belize joined Taiwan in celebrating the 114th National Day with events both at home and abroad. On Wednesday night, the Taiwan Embassy in Belize hosted a vibrant event in Belize City, attended by government officials, business leaders, and community representatives.
The long-standing 36-year relationship between Belize and Taiwan was highlighted during the event. Deputy Prime Minister Cordel Hyde added, “That is a big deal and they appreciate it…Thirty-six years have been a long time.”
Prime Minister John Briceno had recently urged the UN to recognise Taiwan’s contributions, saying, “Taiwan already contributes to the SDGs assisting partners with advanced technology. We therefore urge United Nations to find appropriate ways to recognize Taiwan as an indispensable partner in our shared pursuit of sustainable development.” Taiwan’s Ambassador Lily Li-Wen Hsu referenced the statement, noting its impact: “You can tell right away how people appreciate when our friends on the international stage speak up for us.”
The event also honoured former Belize Ambassador Dr. Candice Pitts and three young Belizeans selected for Taiwan’s Fifty-Sixth World School Children’s Art Exhibition. Ambassador Hsu said, “It is very meaningful to celebrate our national day here with our friends.”
Both Belize and Taiwan face challenges to their sovereignty. DPM Hyde said, “They have been a symbol of great stability…Despite the challenges that surround them, they consistently bat and hit above their weight.” Opposition Leader Tracy Panton added, “It is really important for us to be here to show our appreciation for the friendship, for the partnership, for the support that they have given to both administration.”
