Belize Honours Indigenous Peoples’ Resistance Day
Belize is observing Indigenous Peoples’ Resistance Day today.
The October 12 public holiday was formerly known as Pan American Day and previously marked the date Christopher Columbus first arrived in the Americas in 1492. The government renamed it in November 2021.
The Sarstoon Temash Institute for Indigenous Management (SATIIM) said it joins Indigenous peoples in Belize and around the world in honouring the day. “Today, SATIIM joins Indigenous People in Belize and around the world in honouring Indigenous People’s Resistance Day – a day of remembrance, recognition, and respect for the strength, resilience, and determination of Indigenous People.” SATIIM said it recognises the generations who have stood firm in protecting their ancestral lands, preserving their cultural heritage, defending their rights and safeguarding their traditional knowledge. It said it remains committed to supporting Indigenous peoples in protecting their rights, territories, cultures and ways of life.
The National Institute of Culture and History (NICH) said Indigenous resistance has helped preserve lands, languages, cultures and identities across generations. Its message came from Culture Minister Francis Fonseca, NICH President Albert Vaughan and the institute’s board, administrator and directors. “Their history is one of resistance, survival and strength. Their cultures remain an invaluable part of who we are as a nation.”
The Ministry of the Public Service, Disaster Risk Management and Enterprise said it recognises “the importance of preserving Indigenous knowledge, respecting cultural identity and promoting a society where diversity, inclusion and mutual respect are valued.”
Toledo East area representative Osmond Martinez wished the people of his area a happy and blessed holiday. “No matter where we are or how high we go, we must never forget where we came from. Our struggles, our identity and our culture.”
Oceana Belize said it honours the country’s Indigenous ancestors “who held their ground against great odds, whose fierce resilience kept alive the traditions, histories, and ways of life that define us.”
The Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) said it honours “the strength, resilience, and enduring cultural heritage of Belize’s Indigenous Peoples.” The BCCI and BCCI Western Union’s main office in Belize City is closed for the holiday and reopens Tuesday, October 13.
