Belize Included in U.S. Immigrant Visa Suspension

The U.S. State Department announced earlier today that it will suspend processing of immigrant visas for nationals of seventy-five countries, including Belize, beginning January twenty-first. The State Department is concerned that many applicants could become a burden to the public purse by relying on welfare programs. In response, Belize’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade said it is in communication with the U.S. Embassy in Belmopan and has tasked its embassy in Washington, D.C. to seek clarification on the scope and implications of the freeze. The ministry stressed that only a small number of immigrant visas are processed locally and that there is currently no indication the freeze will impact visitor or student visa applications. Officials emphasized their commitment to ensuring Belizean applicants receive accurate information as the situation unfolds. The U.S. State Department says the freeze will remain in place until U.S. authorities complete a review of their public charge screening procedures. So, for now if you plans involve moving to the U.S., expect delays until the review is complete.
