Belize Joins Global Effort to Turn Oceans Into Jobs and Income

Belize is taking part in a global conversation about how to protect oceans while growing economies. In collaboration with the African Union and the Global Water Partnership, the country is participating in a knowledge exchange focused on the Blue Economy. It is an approach that aims to create jobs and increase income while keeping marine ecosystems healthy.

Put simply, the Blue Economy is about making money from the ocean without destroying it. That means smarter fishing, better planning for boats and marine areas, and even creative ways to pay for ocean projects.

Belize is both sharing its own successes and learning from others. “The vision for the planet itself is a healthy, resilient, and equitably shared ocean that supports a thriving national economy and nurtures the culture and well-being of all Belizeans,” said Samir Rosado, MSP Process Lead at the Coastal Zone Management Authority and Institute (CZMAI).

The collaboration is backed by a global network that connects projects working on oceans and water worldwide. Experts hope the ideas shared will not only help Belize but also shape policies across the Caribbean and Africa.

Throughout the week, officials are expected to trade ideas, explore real-world examples, and identify practical ways to make the Blue Economy work for everyone.
