Belize Launches First Blue Carbon Pilot to Tackle Climate Crisis

Belize has launched its first blue carbon pilot project to develop the country’s first high-quality blue carbon credits and strengthen marine conservation efforts.

The initiative is a partnership between the Government of Belize and Brightwater, through the Ministry of Blue Economy and Marine Conservation. It focuses initially on the Turneffe Atoll, one of the Caribbean’s most diverse marine ecosystems.

“The pilot will serve as a model for scalable, science-driven climate action that delivers measurable emissions reductions, supports sustainable livelihoods, and strengthens the resilience of Belize’s coastal ecosystems and communities,” the government said in its announcement statement.

The pilot includes support from Brightwater’s technical advisors and local partner Turneffe Atoll Sustainability Association under an exclusive agreement. The project’s goal is to restore mangrove and seagrass ecosystems, enhance biodiversity, and support sustainable livelihoods.
