Belize Launches First Public Finance Certification

The Government is rolling out a new training program to boost how public money is managed. Teaming up with UB and the Ministry of Finance, they’ve launched Belize’s first-ever certification in public financial management. It’s the first of its kind in the country, and it’s all part of the Strengthening Public Expenditure Management Project, backed by the Inter-American Development Bank. The program officially kicked off with an orientation session at UB’s Jaguar Auditorium in Belmopan earlier this week. Over 80 public officers from across ministries and departments showed up, ready to dive into topics like budgeting, procurement, and internal auditing, all aimed at boosting transparency and efficiency in government operations. And it’s not just about lectures and handouts. Participants will be using a custom-built digital learning platform, developed by UB’s Open and Distance Learning unit, making the training flexible and accessible. The certification begins on September 1st, and it’s designed to give public officers the tools they need to manage resources responsibly and meet both national and international financial standards.
