Belize Maintains Tier 2 Status in U.S. Trafficking Report

Belize has kept its Tier Two ranking in the U.S. State Department’s 2025 Trafficking in Persons Report. The report warns that while the government is making progress, serious gaps remain. In some cases, officials failed to report or convict trafficking involving government employees. It also found major weaknesses in how foreign workers, including Cubans, Chinese, and Indians, are screened for signs of exploitation. Migrants continue to be at risk of forced labor in farms, construction, domestic work, and restaurants, while some children are exploited in the sex trade, particularly in tourist areas. Corruption among certain police and immigration officers, including bribery and ignoring trafficking cases, makes the problem worse. Overall, the report notes that while Belize is trying to fight trafficking, there is still more work to be done to fully protect victims.
