Belize Monitoring Border as Cartel Activity Reported in Chetumal

Belizean authorities say they are closely monitoring the northern border following reports of cartel-related violence in Chetumal, Quintana Roo.

Prime Minister John Briceño says patrols have increased in and around the free zone, and along the river, while Mexican authorities have deployed thousands of security personnel to address criminal activity on their side.

While officials say the situation has eased somewhat, the Prime Minister maintains that Belize needs additional support, particularly equipment, intelligence, and training, to strengthen its capacity. “And the United States have all three of them. And I believe that, that they can help us now,” the Prime Minister added.
