Belize Out of Danger as TS Melissa Moves North
Tropical Storm Melissa continues to pose as a growing threat to parts of the Caribbean as its slow movement increases the risk of prolonged severe weather. The National Hurricane Center warns that Jamaica and Haiti face the highest risk over the coming days as the slow-moving storm strengthens.
In Jamaica, the danger is rising due to Melissa’s sluggish pace, which could lead to a prolonged period of damaging winds, flooding rains, and landslides. Residents are urged to finish storm preparations immediately, as strong winds and heavy downpours could begin later today or Saturday.
In Haiti, the outlook is far more dire. The NHC warns of catastrophic flash flooding and landslides across the southwestern part of the country from this weekend into early next week. Extensive damage to roads and buildings is expected, with some communities likely to be cut off for days. The center describes the situation as “life-threatening”, urging Haitians to take immediate action to protect life and property. Strong winds could also persist for more than a day across the Tiburon Peninsula.
At this time, Belize remains outside the projected path. Forecast models show Melissa tracking northward rather than westward, keeping Belize in the clear for now.
