Belize Postal Service Pauses U.S. Deliveries Amid Tax Changes
The Belize Postal Service (BPS) has announced a temporary suspension of specific shipments to the United States, effective today, August 27, 2025. According to a statement issued by BPS, this decision stems from the United States Government’s Executive Order 14324, which “suspends duty-free de minimis treatment for all countries” starting August 29.
Under the new order, all goods shipped to the U.S. are now taxed from the first dollar, whereas previously shipments under USD 800 were duty-free. The sender, not the recipient, is now responsible for paying customs duties to U.S. Customs and Border Protection before the item enters the country.
Exceptions include gifts valued under USD 100, which covers both the merchandise and postage, and shipments containing only documents.
The Postal Service said district post offices outside Belize City will accept packages containing goods only until midday on Wednesday, while the Belize City Post Office will accept them until 3:30 p.m.
BTS added that “This new rule will affect all postal operators worldwide and is scheduled to take effect on August 29, 2025.”
“We are making every effort to enable the resumption of all shipments as soon as possible in compliance with the new regulations,” it added.
