Belize River Basin Gets Flood Alert Upgrade

The Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Solid Waste Management, working hand in hand with Taiwan ICDF and National Taiwan University, has wrapped up an innovative project that’s all about keeping people safe in the Belize River Basin when floods strike. Residents can now get up to three hours’ warning before a flood hits. That’s extra time to move to safety, protect your property, and breathe a little easier. Technology played a role, but the real focus was on people. Disaster response teams received specialized training, and experts from Taiwan teamed up with local agencies like the Department of the Environment, the National Meteorological Service, Hydrological Service, and NEMO. Communities were at the heart of it all. There were hands-on workshops in St. Paul’s and Willows Bank, a live drill in Santa Familia, plus public awareness sessions and preparedness kits for families. And the closing ceremony was a celebration, complete with a project video, heartfelt testimonials, and certificates for community members who stepped up and completed training.
