Belize Says Goodbye to Taiwan’s Ambassador Lily Hsu With Top Honour

Belize has formally recognised the service of Lily Li-Wen Hsu, Ambassador of the Republic of China (Taiwan), awarding her one of the country’s highest national honours. Governor General Dame Froyla Tzalam presented the Order of Distinction to Ambassador Hsu for her role in strengthening diplomatic ties and advancing Belize’s national development.

“We live in a time where physical boundaries are no longer limitations to nation-building,” Dame Tzalam said. “Today, we acknowledge someone who listened and supported our people.”

She described the award as a “small gesture of gratitude” for what she called outstanding and meritorious service to Belize.

Ambassador Hsu, who will soon conclude her three-year posting in Belize, said she was deeply honoured by the recognition. “I’m deeply grateful and humbled to receive this significant honour… It has been a great privilege to serve my country and work with our Belizean friends to deepen the bonds between our nations,” she said.

She also thanked Belize for its consistent support of Taiwan on the international stage. “Belize’s advocacy for Taiwan’s engagement in the international community means a lot. Not just on behalf of the government and people, but to me personally, it is very meaningful,” she said.

In an emotional moment, Ambassador Hsu shared that she will be departing earlier than planned following the recent passing of her mother. She also asked for continued support for her successor, who will be returning to Belize for his third tour.

The Order of Distinction is awarded to individuals who have rendered exceptional service to Belize, including non-nationals whose work has strengthened the country’s development and international relationships.
