Belize Secures $12.5M Kuwait Loan to Transform George Price Highway
Belize is getting a big boost to upgrade one of its busiest highways. While attending the World Bank and IMF Annual Meetings, the Government of Belize signed a major loan agreement with the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development. The deal is for twelve-point-five million US dollars to improve an eighteen-mile stretch of the George Price Highway, from Belmopan all the way to La Democracia. And it’s not a quick fix, we’re talking about new service lanes, upgraded bridges, and sixteen dedicated bus stop lanes, all designed to make travel safer, smoother, and more efficient for commuters and trade. This partnership with Kuwait dates back to the 1990s. Over the years, the Kuwait Fund has helped Belize build key roads like the Southern Highway, the Hummingbird Highway, and even the Caracol Road. Signing on behalf of Belize was Financial Secretary Joseph Waight, while Kuwait was represented by Waleed Al-Bahar, Acting Director General of the Fund.
