Belize Seeks International Help to Tackle Sargassum Crisis

Belize is exploring new international support to address the ongoing sargassum problem threatening its coasts and marine ecosystems. Minister of Blue Economy Andre Perez says the country could benefit from grants and soft loans following the historic visit of Lions International Former President Dr. Patti Hill.

Dr. Hill, who is known for her environmental advocacy, met with Belizean officials to discuss conservation efforts and climate-related challenges in the region. Perez highlighted that the Lions Club’s involvement in the Hol Chan Marine Reserve has already set a precedent for collaboration on marine conservation.

“She is very aware of the sargassum issue affecting Belize and the region, and she has shown strong interest in supporting our efforts,” Perez said. “We are looking at possible grants and other assistance through Lions International to help our coastal communities and marine ecosystems.”

The visit marks the first time a Lions International president has visited Belize and could open doors for future partnerships focused on environmental protection and sustainable development.
