Belize Sends Aid to Students Abroad After Hurricane Melissa
In the wake of Hurricane Melissa’s devastating impact, the Government of Belize is stepping up to support its citizens abroad, especially our students studying in Jamaica and Cuba. Through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Belize has sent a shipment of hurricane relief supplies to around seventy-five Belizean students currently in Jamaica. These care packages include essential hygiene items and canned food, basic but vital support during this difficult time. The supplies were flown in aboard a Jamaica Defense Force aircraft that had sought safe harbor in Belize during the storm. Talk about regional solidarity. On the ground in Kingston, Belize’s Honorary Consul is personally overseeing the distribution of the aid. And over in Santiago de Cuba, Belizean students are also receiving support, thanks to coordination by our Embassy in Havana. Foreign Minister Francis Fonseca expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Jamaican government for their compassion and assistance, saying, “Belize remains committed to ensuring the well-being of our students and stands in solidarity with Jamaica during its recovery.” And here’s a bit of relief: all Belizean students in both Jamaica and Cuba are safe and accounted for.
