Belize Wins Award for New Online Loan System

Belize has earned global praise for its efforts to improve how people and businesses borrow money. The country received the Innovation Award at the 2025 Corporate Registers Forum held in Tunisia.

The award celebrates Belize’s new online system, the Secured Transaction and Collateral Registry (STCR), which helps people to use things like equipment, vehicles, or livestock as collateral to get loans. Since launching in 2024, the system has logged over 1,200 notices, giving banks more confidence and helping small businesses get the financing they need.

The registry was created under a new law (Movable Property Security Rights Act, 2024) and is managed by the Financial Services Commission (FSC) and the Belize Companies and Corporate Affairs Registry.

Belize was recognised, alongside countries like Singapore, the Philippines, and Germany, for using technology to make financial systems more transparent and inclusive. Belize’s win signals a shift toward modern, accessible finance, especially for small and micro businesses.
