Belizean Athletes Making History at Central American Games

Good evening, I am Paul Lopez with this week’s edition of Sports Monday. I am Paul Lopez. The Central American Games is in full swing. The games are being hosted in Guatemala and Belizean athletes have displayed exceptional performance in various disciplines. In volleyball, both the female and male national teams have made it to the semi-finals. The female national team defeated Panama, El Salvador and Guatemala over the weekend. Those victories secured their place in the semi-finals for the first time in the tournament’s history. They played against Nicaragua in the semi-finals today. Nicaragua won that match three sets to one. Belize is now set to face off against Guatemala on Tuesday for the bronze medal. The male national team, on the other hand, will play against Nicaragua later tonight in their semi-finals match. It is also the first time in the game’s history that the males are making it to the semifinals. And, while our volleyball players battle it out to podium, one athlete has already secured a silver medal. Nyasha Harris, ran a personal best in the one hundred meters finals and crossed the finish line in second place. We spoke with her today about her accomplishment.

“I was not focused on the place I came in. I was focused on the time. When I say I ran the 11.86 I was still shocked. And, I had to go and check and see that it was 11.86 and I had to walk back on the track to see what I placed. I didn’t quite know the time, because I saw the girl in third place came in the same time. When I saw the second next to my name I was really excited and I am still shocked. One of the main goals for this competition was breaking from 12.04 to 11.86. I think it was like eighteen milli seconds. That was one of my biggest goal and that was what I was working on the most. We were hoping for third and eleven. I actually got second and the eleven”

Belize also saw participation in the female four hundred meters free style swim. Davia Richardson placed second. Cycling, softball, judo and fencing also took centerstage during the games. And from the regional scene to local sports, the Williams Dawson Sprite/Digi Basketball Tournament is in its second week. On Saturday, Survivors took on Boulevard Ballers in a match that ended with a score of thirty-eight to forty-seven in favor of Boulevard Ballers. The second match of the day saw Western Paradise take on Tuff E Nuff. This one was close, but in the end Western Paradise brought down the mighty Tuff Enuff in a match that ended with a score of fifty to forty-five points.

Those matches were played in Belize City. And later that night, we travelled up north to Orange Walk, for the Kevin Bernard Basketball Tournament Finals. This one saw Tuff E Nuff play against Hammer Boyz for all the marbles. And, while Tuff E Nuff did not have a good showing in the earlier tournament, they came out to win in Orange Walk. Tuff E Nuff defeated Hammer Boyz with a score of sixty-two points to fifty-three. Tuff E Nuff are your 2025 Kevin Bernard Basketball Tournament champions. Well folks, that is all we have for you in tonight’s coverage of Sports Monday. Catch you in the next one.
