Four Belizeans are attending the International Conference on Colonialism, Neocolonialism, and the Territorial Dispossessions of Western Imperialism, which opened in Caracas, Venezuela, on Thursday, October 2nd.

The event has drawn representatives from 57 countries and is focused on building strategies for unity, sovereignty, and historical justice. The 2-day conference includes over 150 participants from political, academic, and social movements.

Representing Belize are Felicita Cantún of the northern Maya Community, Alex Norbelto, president of the Garifuna Council, Director of Good Governance Unit César Ross, and Marin Coleman, Chair of the United Black Association for Development
Educational Foundation (UEF),

Cantún delivered a presentation on reparations and the appropriation of ancestral assets.

The Belize delegation participated in discussions with Venezuela’s Minister for Indigenous Peoples, Clara Vidal.

According to organizers, the forum aims to establish concrete lines of action to reshape the global system into a multipolar model.

Venezuela has positioned itself as the host of the forum to promote global resistance against ongoing forms of domination and to support efforts for reparations related to historical injustices such as slavery, land dispossession, and cultural suppression.
