Belizean Music Eyes Global Breakthrough
Belize’s music industry is buzzing with ambition and creative energy, but industry leaders say it has stalled at the point where international expansion should begin.
Music producer Devin “DJ Perf” Peyrefitte says local artists have reached their ceiling within Belize and now face a structural gap that limits global reach.
“At this specific moment I would say the industry is thriving because we figured out certain aspects as to where we are trying to head as musicians, in terms of the goal to take Belizean music outside,” Peyrefitte said. “The only thing is we reached a stop as to what is next. We reached a gap in that they are at a certain level in Belize and they can’t go outside.”
Producers are now testing international interest through artists such as STIG and King Rome, who are performing abroad and measuring audience response to Belizean music.
“What we are trying to do right now is figure out how we can export local talent abroad… We are trying to see if it is something the world wants, Belizean music,” he added.
Despite early signs of success, industry players say Belize lacks the infrastructure, investment, and coordinated support needed to consistently export local talent.
What will it take to move Belizean music from local stages to international markets? The challenges and opportunities will be explored in tonight’s Kolcha Tuesday.
