A Belizean sport-fishing team is representing the country this week in one of the most prestigious offshore tournaments in the world.

“Team Catchin A Buzz” is currently competing in the Costa Offshore World Championship in Quepos, which concludes tomorrow.

The team earned its place on the global stage after qualifying through the Grand Caribe Deep Sea Classic, which was recently recognized as an official qualifying event for the championship.

Often described as the “Olympics of offshore fishing,” the Costa Offshore World Championship brings together elite anglers and teams from more than 40 countries, all competing for the title of world champion.

This year’s tournament features hundreds of participants from across the globe, targeting prized species such as sailfish and marlin in Costa Rica’s Pacific waters. Organizers say the event not only highlights high-level competition, but also fosters international camaraderie among fishing communities.

The championship also enforces strict international sport-fishing standards, including video verification of catches and adherence to International Game Fish Association rules.

Beyond the chance to claim the world title, teams are competing for international recognition and the honor of representing their countries at the highest level of the sport.
